Despite the introduction of oral rotavirus vaccine into the Australian National Immunisation Program in 2007, the rate of hospitalisation for rotavirus gastroenteritis for Northern Territory Aboriginal children remains more than 20 times higher than the rate of hospitalisation for non-Indigenous children in other states. Epidemics of rotavirus remain common in remote central and northern Australia and place enormous strain on remote communities and health services. In this presentation Bianca will discuss her PhD work which seeks to explore practical, ethical and implementable strategies to reduce the burden of gastroenteritis amongst Australian Aboriginal children, with a particular focus on improving the real-world effectiveness of oral rotavirus vaccine.

Bianca is a paediatrician at the Royal Darwin Hospital and a PhD student at Menzies.
