Abstract: In 2016, the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, commissioned the Centre for Child Development and Education to develop, implement and evaluate a parenting program for rural and remote provinces of Papua New Guinea. Pasin bilong lukautim pikinini gut is the local name for the program in tok pisin and means, How to care for children well. The aim of the program is to reduce child maltreatment and violence against children and to improve family wellbeing.

This talk will report on the development and piloting of Pasin bilong lukautim pikinini gut, the challenges of developing an effective program for volunteers, the findings of the pilot in 10 communities, and future directions for the program in PNG, including plans for a research trial and scale-up of the program.

Biography: Gary is Director of the Centre for Child Development and Education and leads the Strong Parents and Children Research and Resilient Youth Research themes. Read more on the CCDE website.
