Midpul Installation Project – Unveiling

at 11:30am on Friday 30 September 2016

Blue 2, ACIKE Precinct

Charles Darwin University is currently completing the installation of a seat, featuring the painted ceramic artwork of Larrakia elder, Midpul, (aka Prince of Wales) in the sand area forecourt of Blue Precinct. The ceramics incorporated into this site-specific seat installation was created by this major Australian Indigenous artist and Larrakia elder Midpul (circa 1937 – 2002) who was a senior Larrakia elder and a major Larrakia artist, whose country encompasses the land on which the city of Darwin in built. In 2010 the University accepted a decommissioned work of ceramic tiles, painted by Midpul, as part of an earlier commission by the Darwin City Council for the Darwin Mall. Work to remove each hand-painted ceramic tile from its besser brick foundation was successfully done, and each piece incorporated into the seat, which retains the original integrity of the work.

OPVCIL will unveil the seat in a ceremony with local Larrakia Elders at 11:30am on Friday 30 September 2016.
