A Multicultural Northern Territory

A Multicultural Northern Territory Banner

The Demography and Growth Planning team at the Northern Institute have been working with the Territory Families’ Office of Multicultural Affairs to provide a compendium of information based on the 2016 Census and the multicultural profile of the people of the Northern Territory. These Census statistics show that around 46% of the population is culturally or linguistically diverse, with 26% being Indigenous Territorians and 20% born overseas.

The work in this project identifies the growing demographic, economic and social importance of our diverse cultural background. In this chart, our fastest growing migrant communities are identified.

The report is a series of files enabling you to access a large amount of data on key indicators about the Territory’s multicultural make-up like birthplace, ancestry and languages. Files are being progressively released on this web page so please come back soon to check out what’s been loaded.

  • On 28 March 2018, the Office of Multicultural Affairs (Northern Territory Department of Families) hosted a seminar at which we presented trends and key findings from the report to the Office on the multicultural make-up of the Northern Territory and the demography of our multicultural communities. • An additional presentation to the multicultural community of Alice Springs was hosted by Multicultural Community Services of Central Australia and supported by the Office of Multicultural Affairs (Northern Territory Department of Families) in late June 2018. It presented a local focus on Alice Springs within the context of more general findings for the Northern Territory. Link to presentation.

Northern Territory Profile workbook Updated in August 2018
Please be advised that changes have been made to the Northern Territory Profile workbook. The major change has been to the worksheet profiling Greater Darwin because the previously published 2011 data was based on a slightly different geographic boundary which added population to the area, making direct comparison misleading. The largest difference is related to the overall population growth (now larger) and the growth of the Australian born population (now larger). During the update it was also discovered that the final tables in the worksheet were based on the total NT population, rather than the Greater Darwin area. We apologise for any confusion this has caused. Other minor amendments have also been applied.
