Our goals


NI’s mission is underpinned by a number of key aims:goals

  • develop and undertake social and policy research of significance for the region

  • attract external research funding and undertake a coordinated program of social and public policy research of a high standard and be recognised at a national and international level

  • provide support for stakeholders to connect with social and public policy researchers across Charles Darwin University

  • build local capacity to undertake leading research in regional contexts

  • ensure staff with specialist research skills are available to undertake social and policy research and foster cross-disciplinary and team research

  • provide a productive research development environment for staff

  • provide quality research training

  • train research (HDR) students in a supportive and stimulating academic environment

  • lead an active public engagement and events program that engages stakeholders in key social and public policy debates

  • establish a viable mixed business model to ensure the sustainability of the Northern Institute.
