Dr Benxiang Zeng

Dr. Benxiang Zeng holds a PhD in the area of International Tourism Management from the University of Queensland, Australia. Dr. Zeng is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Northern Institute, Charles Darwin University (CDU). He is based in Alice Springs, The Northern Territory, Australia.

Dr. Zeng is a multidisciplinary researcher focusing on social sciences and humanities. Since 1989, he has been doing research and/or research management in the areas of tourism economics, tourism management, Indigenous tourism, regional development, community participation and environmental management field. He has a strong research focus and interest in socio-cultural, economic and environmental impacts of industries such as tourism and services on local communities either in Australia and China. Prior to his current position, he worked for Chinese Academy of Science, Chinese National Committee for Man and the Biosphere Programme under UNESCO, and The Northern Territory Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport. He has been in partnership with researchers in China, Taiwan and other Asian regions. He has a good knowledge of Asian countries.

Since 1989, Dr. Zeng has led, coordinated and participated in around 40 research projects at different levels and scales. He has also been project officer to have gained extensive experience in research project management. He supervises postgraduate students studying tourism economics, regional economic development and sustainability. Dr. Zeng has been actively engaging and contributing to academic communities through memberships, peer reviewing, conference attendance and publication. He has produced more than 70 scholarly publications including papers published in prestigious international journals, such as Tourism Management.

  • 2004  Award for Outstanding Self-funded Students Studying Abroad, from Chinese National Scholarship Council.
  • 1996  Fred Packard Award for China-MAB, from World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA). As a team member.
