John Prior

Research Associate

Having qualified and taught in the UK for a couple of years John Prior moved to PNG where he was a teacher's college lecturer from 1970-77. During 1977/78 John completed a Masters of Education by coursework and minor thesis through James Cook University in Townsville. John then came to the NT where he taught adults and older students at Yirrkala School and Homelands for several years before serving as Assistant Principal for one year.

John moved on to ATSIC in 1991 as a Senior Project Officer around East Arnhem giving him the opportunity to become familiar with the communities and programs. Towards the end 1999 John left ATSIC and moved into the NT Local Government as a Community Development Officer, where he worked for 2 years in East Arnhem.

In early 2002 John joined Senator Trish Crossin's staff and remained there, based in Darwin, until "retiring" in 2011. During that time John focused on education, regional development and Indigenous Affairs.

During most of his time in the NT he was a tutor for CDU. Upon "retirement" he was fortunate to gain additional teaching and marking on courses at CDU where he continues to work within the Northern Institute (NI) and the Australian Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Education (ACIKE).
