Clinical training blocks

Nursing students

A Simulation Block (SB) is an on-campus intensive providing students with an opportunity to practice specific nursing interventions, integrate theory into practice and develop an understanding of the requirements of professional nursing practice according to the NMBA RN Standards for Practice (2016).

It is also a great opportunity for students to meet each other, form friendships and study groups and get to know lecturers who teach in the nursing course.

Simulation Blocks are a compulsory and integral component of Bachelor of Nursing course-clinical units.

I had a great chance to practice a variety of clinical skills including communication, documentation, patient assessment and fundamentals of care.

Simulation block is your opportunity for you to put all the great things you have learnt into practice. During simulation block you have opportunity to think like a nurse, talk like a nurse and acting like a nurse. During simulation you get to work with your peers, learn new skills and build your confidence to be a great nurse!

The simulation block is designed for me to develop their clinical skills and start putting theory into practice. Over the course of the week I had a great chance to practice a variety of clinical skills including communication, documentation, patient assessment and fundamentals of care.

The Simulation block helps students prepare for placement and the aim is to develop the necessary clinical skills to have a safe and productive first placement. During the week, you will be introduced to the concept of clinical assessments and peer feedback. Throughout your nursing career you will have regular clinical assessments from annual basic life support to annual maths tests, and the simulation block is a great place to become more confident in clinical assessment.

Clinical placement information

The Faculty of Health requires a standard set of health and safety checks to be completed and certified true copy documents provided before you are eligible to undertake clinical placement. These requirements are mandatory for all our students and can vary from state and territory. Please refer to College Central for further information.

Professional Experience Placement (PEP)

PEP occurs in real clinical settings, working alongside registered midwives, nurses, and others in the clinical team with vulnerable populations. These are real-world settings, so your PEP will take place over all shifts, weekends and public holidays, and on some placements, you will be attending call-outs at short notice. There is PEP in each year of the degree, which is a hurdle requirement of the units and therefore attendance is mandatory. It is likely some of your PEP allocations will be located away from home and family requiring travel and accommodation. Travel and accommodation are at the students’ cost.
