Senior Lecturer - Medical Laboratory Science/ Coordinator

Ongoing Research interest/projects – Translational Biomedical Research

Cardiovascular risk assessment & support techniques - encompassing

  • Whole blood viscosity issues – the focus on this work is to elucidate the usefulness of a known, but sub-optimally utilized, specific index of vasculopathy.
  • Prediabetes, undiagnosed diabetes and cardiovascular risk assessment studies (PUDCRAS) – this research is targeted at establishing a heart disease risk assessment model for people with prediabetes.
  • Community based public health screening for early identification & intervention of prediabetes

Oxidative stress & metabolic syndrome research: Determination of erythrocyte oxidative stress status in diabetes and its cardiovascular complication was the focus during my PhD. I am now extending the research into

  • Anatomical pathology perspective – histological effects of excessive consumption antioxidant food & herbs. This is focused on presenting the downside of antioxidants.
  • Complementary medicine (e.g. exercise physiology & nutritional) – This is evident by some of the most recent journal papers listed below. I am also extending the research to medical nutrition therapy (MNT) and emerging computer-based diagnostic technologies.

Postgraduate research students being supervised

Prajwal Gyawali (Biomedical Scientist) – studying “Oxidative stress and haemorrheology in subjects with diabetes mellitus and hypertension” through Charles Sturt University for a PhD

Marcus Sanders (Biomedical/Forensic Scientist) – studying “efficacy & toxicity of complementary medicine” through Charles Darwin University for a PhD
