First year success

In 2013, Belinda Probert was engaged to investigate student retention and success at CDU. Both her report and the broader literature about student retention in higher education indicate that students’ experiences in the first semester of study play a major role in their overall success.

In response, the student retention project has developed the following initiatives:

  • Teaching and learning grants
  • Student email campaign
  • First Year Toolkit.

The aim is to support students’  transition into higher education in their first year, and to support teaching staff to design “intentional and holistic first year curriculum” (Kift, 2009).
