Are you always looking for creative ways to improve your home or environment? Enjoy DIY home improvement solutions? Or perhaps you are inspired when you see décor or buildings? A career in design is calling you.

This course explores the concepts and theories of architecture, interior design and construction with a particular focus on tropical environments. You will develop theoretical and practical skills in designing the built environment – buildings and their surrounds, as well as computer-aided design (CAD) and the preparation of design and working drawings.

You will have a sound understanding of the principles and practices of these industries and can use this degree as a stepping stone into more specific qualifications in architecture.

Career opportunities

The skills you gain in this course will prepare you to fulfil roles in architecture, interior design and the broader design and construction fields. Other opportunities may include further study leading to a degree in architecture and registration as an architect.

Course structure

The first year of this course focuses on the representation of ideas in design while the second year focuses on concepts of space and the built form. The final year consolidates and extends knowledge gained in the first two years of study to complex designs with a regional focus.

No more than 20 credit points shall be counted with a grade of "PC" in a Bachelor AQF Level 7 course award and no more than 10 credit points at "PC" may be received at the highest level of the program of learning.

* a minimum of 60 credit points must be taken from 300 level units or above

COURSE CHANGES and TRANSITION arrangements - 2015

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Design prior to 2015 will note some changes to the Course Structure.
 
Students who have previously completed CAI102 and/or AHT232 may count these towards the new structure as electives.
Students who have completed ARC109 should not complete DES140.
Students who have completed ARC352 should not complete DES352
 
Students who have completed CAI102, AHT232 and INT352 do not need to complete DES352 (or they will be disadvantaged)

COURSE CHANGES and TRANSITION arrangements - 2011

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Design prior to 2011 will note some changes to the Course Structure.

Reduction to core
ENG304 Engineering Design Project is no longer required as a core unit.  Continuing students may count this unit as an elective towards their award.

Redeveloped Units
Students who have completed a unit under the 2010 unit code are not required to complete the new unit.
