Undergraduate
Bachelor of Science
2021
External: this course is available online through distance education with some on-campus attendance requirements.
The Bachelor of Science will allow you to explore your curiosity and passion for knowledge within your chosen scientific field.
Your study options are flexible and diverse with a focus on professional experience in various sciences including biologist, ecologist, spatial scientist, biomedical scientist, chemist, or in other science fields.
You will combine academic studies with practical learning in distinctive environments and communities of northern Australia and the region, and their associated challenges in environmental management and public health, including Indigenous health.
You will strengthen your problem solving, logical and critical thinking skills, apply an understanding of scientific and technological factors, and consider issues from various cultural, economic and other societal perspectives throughout your studies helping you to approach tasks informed and confident.
You will be able to demonstrate and apply an understanding of their chosen areas of science, including concepts, theories and principles to practise in real situations.
Career opportunities
Graduating from this may lead you to career opportunities in the industry, government, private companies, non-government organisations (NGO) and the community sector as a biologist, ecologist, spatial scientist, biomedical scientist, chemist, consultant, laboratory assistant, project manager or advisor.

Course structure
This course consists of common units, science specialist elective and elective units as described in the course outline. Students may complete a General Science course or specialisations selected from disciplines such as in Biomedical Science, Ecology, and Geographical Information Science. These courses are structured to ensure fundamental science foundations are then supported by advanced units appropriate to the discipline area. Professional practice experiences are a feature of the course. Please note that external students are required to attend on-campus intensive teaching blocks depending on the units studied.
A candidate must successfully complete units totalling 240 credit points (cp) as detailed below. All units are valued at 10 credit points unless indicated.
Unit type | Credit Points | Specific requirements |
Common Units (2 units) |
20cp | Common units totalling 20 credit points as detailed below. CUC107 Cultural Intelligence and Capability (compulsory) PLUS EITHER: CUC100 Academic Literacies Through Exploring Sustainability OR Select Common Units to find out more about individual units and advanced standing options. |

Students who have completed PH310, PH230, PH240 or IND173 should contact their unit co-ordinator to discuss their study plan. PLUS PLUS Students should pay attention to prerequisites and assumed knowledge when planning a General Science program of study. Students may select suitable L-Open University Australia units with the approval of the course coordinator. Group A |
General Electives (5-7 units) |
50-70 | Elective units to a maximum of 70 credit points. Please refer to the requirements for specialist electives in each major to ensure a total of 240 credit points. Electives can be selected from undergraduate units offered by the University. Students may select additional units from the specialisations above as electives if desired.
When selecting electives, choose units at a suitable level. The first number in each unit code indicates the year level at which the subject is taught. Undergraduate units are coded at 100 to 300 level, therefore units coded as SBI1xx, SBI2xx and SBI3xx would be first, second and third year units respectively. When selecting specialist and elective units ensure the overall course requirements of a maximum of 100 credit points at 100 level and a minimum of 60 credit points at 300 level are met. |
240cp | Total Credit Points |
Students who commenced in or after 2013
No more than 20 credit points shall be counted with a grade of "PC" in a Bachelor AQF Level 7 course award and no more than 10 credit points at "PC" may be received at the highest level of the program of learning.
Of the total 240 credit points: (unless specified in the specific course structure above)
* not more than 100 credit points may be taken from 100 level units
* a minimum of 60 credit points must be taken from 300 level units or above
Students should refer to the current Grading Policy and Common Course Rules for further information.
Course Changes - 2021

NUR241 Challenge and Response to Body Integrity 2 has been replaced by SBI242 Pharmacology for Clinical Practice
Study plan
Students commencing in Semester 1
The Recommended Study Plan provided below is suitable for a student commencing in semester 1 and enrolling in a standard load. Students entering this course with advanced standing, or wishing to reduce or vary their study plan due to work, personal, financial or other reasons should use the table as a guide to create an individual study plan.
When designing an individual study plan:
- ensure Common Units are completed in the first year of study;
- maintain the basic order in which units are to be attempted; and
- check the assumed knowledge for each unit as some 200 and 300 level units assume you have completed foundation unit/s in the unit area at a lower level. 200 level units have the unit code which includes a number starting with 200.
