This course will develop advanced knowledge and skills in academic writing, research, critical thinking and intercultural communication to successfully undertake postgraduate study at CDU. Advanced English language skills appropriate to postgraduate level studies are also developed, both iteratively throughout the course and in the English for Postgraduate Studies Unit, to enable you to read, write, communicate and critically analyse higher level concepts and complex issues in intercultural contexts.
The course emphasizes the practical application of these advanced knowledge and skills and will help you understand that reading and writing skills are necessary to the process of thinking, learning and creating meaning. They are iterative processes developed and improved throughout the course.
You will develop skills in reflective, autonomous and collaborative practices to successfully engage in learning and assessment activities at postgraduate level. An underlying philosophy of the course is that academic studies at postgraduate level is a social and contextual activity that requires developing appropriate attitudes and behaviours towards studying, fellow students and the wider academic community.
The course will help you achieve the CDU graduate quality outcomes and reflect the values of CDU. As a course designed to prepare you for postgraduate studies at CDU this course is the first steps towards equipping and inspiring you to shape and respond to the opportunities and challenges of the future as an accomplished communicator, highly regarded professional and culturally competent citizen in local, national, and global society.

International tuition fees
The annual tuition fee for full time study is AUD $14,336.00. This equates to $3,584.00 per 10 credit point unit (0.125 EFTSL).
These fees are subject to increases annually, effective at the start of each calendar year.

What will I study?
The information provided for this course was valid for the final year of enrolment. Students continuing in this course may find there have been some changes to the unit availability. Students should, in the first instance, refer to the recommended study plan in the newest version of this course to make their unit selection for the current year.
Course structure
Every re-enrolling student will be able to complete their current course of study. As a continuing student you should always consider transferring to the newest course version to enable you to take advantage of new and exciting changes to university programs. Students electing not to transfer should refer to the transitional arrangements where provided.

A candidate must successfully complete 4 units totalling 40 credit points (cp) over one semester as detailed below. All units are compulsory and are taught concurrently and are valued at 10 credit points each.
Students are expected to spend 12-13 hours per week on each unit over a 12-week teaching period. This includes lectures, tutorials, reading, independent and group study and contact with staff members. However, additional time will be needed depending on the entry level of a student’s English language skills.
Each unit is timetabled for five hours face to face classes per week: two hours of lectures, two hours of tutorials and one hour of guided pre-reading.

English language requirements
To gain entry into Charles Darwin University, all Higher Education applicants must satisfy the University's English Language Proficiency Requirements for their chosen course of study. International applicants will be required to supply evidence of this at the time of application.
The minimum English language requirement for this course is met by either undertaking previous education in an English-speaking country or undertaking one of the following English language tests and obtaining the minimum requirements listed below.
