CDU AI Principles
1. AI literacy and accessibility
CDU will equip our community with the skills and support needed to understand and work effectively with Artificial Intelligence. As a dual-sector university we ensure equitable access to Gen AI tools across all qualification levels. No student or staff member will be disadvantaged due to background, ability, location, or circumstance.
2 .Respect for First Nations knowledge and data sovereignty
Artificial Intelligence use must respect Indigenous knowledge, cultural values, and the rights of First Nations communities to control their data. This means engaging with First Nations peoples in partnership and ensuring their voices guide how AI interacts with their knowledge systems.
3. Responsibility and human oversight
Artificial Intelligence will assist decision-making, but ultimate responsibility for outcomes rests with people. Human oversight ensures Artificial Intelligence supports ethical choices and accountability remains with individuals. Critical thinking remains essential, empowering our community to evaluate Artificial Intelligence outputs thoughtfully and make informed decisions aligned with our values of courage, kindness, openness, innovation, and leadership.
4. Academic and research integrity
Artificial Intelligence must uphold honesty, originality, and respect for scholarly work across vocational training, higher education, and research. It should enhance, not replace, critical thinking, which is central to our academic mission. Artificial Intelligence should support learning and discovery that matters to the Northern Territory and our regions. Sources must be transparently acknowledged and cited.
5. Equity and inclusion
AI systems must treat everyone equitably, avoiding bias and promoting inclusive outcomes. We will actively monitor and adjust AI use to prevent discrimination and ensure fair opportunities for all members of our community.
6. Privacy and security
AI must safeguard personal information with robust protections to maintain data security. We commit to responsible AI use with transparent boundaries on data collection, storage, and sharing across our multi-campus operations—from capital cities to remote communities—to preserve trust and security.
7. Workforce and operations
Gen AI will enhance teaching, research, and administration while supporting staff and student wellbeing. It should amplify efficiency and creativity without diminishing the value of human expertise and contribution. Our people—not technology—make CDU Australia's most connected university.
8. Collaboration and ongoing review
Artificial Intelligence principles will be developed together and regularly updated to reflect new insights and community needs. We commit to open dialogue, continuous learning, and adapting our approach as technology and society evolve.
