Maths Camp and Enrichment Activities

Maths camp

The camp, led by CDU Senior Lecturer in Education - Mathematics, Dr Khalid Khan and retired academic, Dr Ian Roberts, is designed to get students more involved in maths and increase teacher leadership and confidence with maths material. Attendees undertake organised activities and general chats about mathematics.

Our Impact

Local

Such camps have been running in the NT (Top End and The Centre) since 2009, with over 1000 students and 400 teachers/adults participating. The theme is always Fun, Thinking, and Friendship, and mathematical activities are organised into Maths Worlds, with participants ranging from Years 5 to 12 and over 30 schools.

International

Based on our model and support, and with international collaboration, similar Maths Camps now run in Germany, Japan and the USA. International online variations were also initiated during COVID-19 and are still offered. The link to our International Online Camp is here:

In August 2024, we organised this camp where 45 students and volunteer teachers came together at the remote Bachelor town to solve all things Maths and was led by CDU Senior Lecturer in Education - Mathematics, Dr Khalid Khan and retired academic, Dr Ian Roberts.

These activities and camps are basically designed to get students more involved in mathematics and increase teacher leadership and confidence with maths material.

In 2024, this event was held from Friday (Aug 23rd) evening to Sunday (Aug 25th) morning at the Batchelor Outdoor Education Centre and saw attendees undertake organised activities and general chats about mathematics.

More than 100 students, parents, and teachers gathered at the Danala | Education and Community Precinct’s Radicle Centre for a two-day Maths Camp.

Charles Darwin University (CDU) Senior Lecturer in Education – Mathematics, Dr Khalid Khan, has co-organised the routine camps with the founder, ex-CDU colleague and now a university fellow, Dr Ian Roberts, since 2009, though this is the first year the event took place at the university’s city campus.

Three interstate mathematicians -Dr Stephen Thornton of CSU, Dr Adam Mammoliti of UNSW, and Elizabeth Barker ANU flew in to help deliver different fun workshops (known as Maths Worlds) along with three Darwin-based mathematicians -Dr Khalid Khan of CDU, Dr Ian Roberts of CDU, and Dr Judith Egan of Palmerston Senior College. Dr Carla Eisemberg, Sarah Sutcliffe and Danielle White of Radicle Centre provided all the logistics. INPEX and ACS-NT sponsored the camp.
