New student club for Sydney’s IT students

November 2025 edition
SITSA

Sydney’s IT students have banded together to form a new branch of a Charles Darwin University’s (CDU) student association just in time for the campus’s first time hosting a Code Fair.

Just as the Northern Territory offers a unique environment for resident students, so does New South Wales – the Sydney IT Students Association (SITSA) was formed in 2025 to provide the unique support for students learning and working in Australia’s largest city.

The club, which has amassed a membership of more than 40 students, was started with the support of IT academic staff members Dr Jamal El-Den, Dr Reem Sherif, Dr Mukhtar Hussain, and Dr Pritika, as well as students Shishiran Jan, Sheetu Prakash, and Grace Ponmudi.

Dr El-Den, coordinator of the IT discipline Sydney, said the association provided opportunities such as networking sessions, coding competitions, guest lectures from industry experts, career development workshops, and social events aimed at building stronger peer connections, leadership skills and critical thinking.

“Given the constantly evolving nature of IT, forming a network of students in this space is invaluable – it allows for the sharing of knowledge, exposure to new tools and technologies, and the creation of collaborative projects,” he said.

“A strong student network not only supports academic success but also provides members with a professional edge when entering the workforce.

“With a diverse group of students, SITSA brings together varied perspectives, experiences, and approaches to problem-solving. This diversity is a strength that will enable the association to evolve alongside emerging technologies, incorporating fresh ideas and innovative thinking about how things should be done in the future.”

SITSA President Ipsa Khadka said the university experience wasn’t just about attending classes, but about finding your footing and building a community.

“My main goal is simple: to sustain passion. I meet so many students here at CDU Sydney who are passionate about technology, enthusiastic about innovating and building tools, but that zeal can fade quickly when they get busy with complex coursework and demanding part-time jobs,” Ms Khadka said.

“I want this organisation to be the constant source of energy, motivation and engagement that keeps them focused on their long-term career goals. I want every student to have confidence and network to rigorously pursue their chosen career path.

“We will provide mentorship, practical exposure, and a community that reminds every member of the incredible opportunities waiting for them in the industry.”
