As part of National Science Week local artists have the opportunity to express their creativity, while educating students and the community on the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

The 2020 Science Week online community grants will provide $250 for artists and STEM professionals to create inspiring learning material for Territorians to access online.

CDU Science Outreach Manager Dr Carla Eisemberg said all STEM related topics would be considered, from the comedy of chemistry to the poetry of physics, science story-time, paper folding, musical math and everything in between.

“We hope to develop a series of 20-30 original, exciting and engaging online video posts about STEM through the creative mediums of circus, theatre, storytelling, dance, poetry, music and visual arts,” she said.

“The resulting video posts will be a fun and engaging way to transport STEM into the home and engage effectively with people remotely.”

She said that amid the current isolation and hardship caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, it was also an opportunity to support local artists.

“These videos will be shown online during National Science Week (15 to 23 August) and should target a wide audience from primary to secondary students, educators, guardians and the general public, and follow accurate scientific theory,” Dr Eisemberg said.

“Support from researchers will be available on request.”

Dr Eisemberg said CDU’s Science Outreach programs had been altered to suit the current circumstances caused by COVID-19.

“We want to maintain our engagement with as many people as possible with the new program,” she said. “There are several opportunities for CDU students, school-aged students and the general public to get involved in the program in the coming months.”

Applications for the 2020 Science Week online community grants close on 19 May 2020. For more information visit the Inspired NT website: https://www.inspirednt.com.au/events-activities/national-science-week-grants/
