Community of Practice
The Indigenous Educators Community of Practice brings together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educators from across the Northern Territory to strengthen professional networks, share knowledge, and create trusted spaces of cultural and professional support.
Facilitated through the First Nations Training and Teacher Education Hub at Charles Darwin University, the CoP is grounded in the principles of self-determination, cultural safety, and collective leadership. Each gathering provides space for yarning, reflection, and collaboration, guided by themes such as “Walking Together: What does a self-determined education space look like?” and “Strengthening Our Network, Sharing What Works, and Growing Together”.
Through regular sessions and school-based partnerships, the CoP:
- Connects Indigenous educators across regions to share strategies, challenges, and successes.
- Promotes mentoring, peer support, and wellbeing.
- Showcases culturally responsive practices and community-led leadership models.
- Supports pathways for career progression, from classroom educators to leadership roles.
- Explores future directions such as a recognised Indigenous Educators Association and Territory-wide advocacy through partnership with PTANT and APONT.
At its core, this community celebrates the voices and strengths of Indigenous educators, walking together to create spaces where our ways of knowing, being, and doing shape the future of education.
TAE (Training and Assessment)
Creating accessible pathways through the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector, including the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE), to grow qualified Aboriginal educators and trainers across the NT.
Indigenous Knowledge in Education
Embedding Aboriginal ways of knowing, being, and doing into teacher education. This project highlights the importance of cultural knowledge as sovereign, living practice and ensures curricula reflect First Nations perspectives, values, and strengths.
