CDU builds its international strength

Charles Darwin University is building its strength internationally with the appointment of a Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Global Strategy and Advancement, which is a newly created position.

CDU Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Maddocks said he was delighted that Mr Andrew Everett would join the senior executive team on 1 May.

Mr Everett has spent much of the past 16 years working at a senior level in international engagement at the University of Queensland and consulting to the Queensland Government in the area of international education and training.

Professor Maddocks said the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Global Strategy and Advancement was created in the context of CDU’s new strategic plan, entitled Connect Discover Grow.

“Our new strategic plan expresses our ambition to become a truly international dual sector university,” Professor Maddocks said.

“This appointment will be central to our success in that space and is a demonstration of our commitment to growth internationally.”

Mr Everett will take on responsibility for a range of CDU’s international and advancement areas including the Office of International Services, and the Office of Marketing and Engagement.

“Our geographical position at the southern rim of Asia, combined with our research and teaching expertise, suggests that CDU has a particularly bright future by engaging more to our north,” Professor Maddocks said.

During the past year Mr Everett completed a draft of the $25.3 million Queensland State International Education and Training Strategy, 2016 – 2026, which after consultation with industry was approved by the Queensland Cabinet and State Treasury.

He also took part in a review of administrative processes and governance for the enrolment of international students in Queensland’s primary and secondary schools.

Before that Mr Everett was Director of UQ International at the University of Queensland where international student enrolments grew by more than 120% in the 10 years to 2015.

He had responsibility for more than 80 staff including some based in the USA, Chile, China, Vietnam, India and Europe, and was instrumental in UQ expanding into new international markets.

Mr Everett is a past Chair of the Universitas 21 (U21) International Directors. U21 is a global network of research intensive universities.
