CDU Artificial Intelligence declaration
Our approach to Artificial Intelligence at Charles Darwin University is grounded in three core principles:
Local relevance
Generative AI (Gen AI) implementation must be contextually appropriate for CDU's specific environment, student demographics, and regional circumstances. We will evaluate Artificial Intelligence tools and applications based on their suitability for our community, including data sovereignty and cultural integrity, not simply their technical capabilities.
Relational working, reflection and resistance
We recognise that Artificial Intelligence exists within human systems and relationships, not apart from them. Our governance framework recognises the disruptive nature of Artificial Intelligence and will:
- Maintain the centrality of human judgment, pedagogical expertise, critical thinking and interpersonal connection in educational design and delivery.
- Create structured opportunities for reflection before implementation, asking "should we?" alongside "can we?"
- Reserve the right to resist automation when human insight, cultural knowledge, or individual circumstances require person-to-person engagement
Careful consideration
Determining when and how to deploy artificial intelligence requires deliberate evaluation. We commit to thoughtful decision-making processes that prioritise student outcomes, educational integrity, and CDU’s values including innovation, leadership and courage, over efficiency alone.
Academic Integrity
Learn about academic integrity by participating in activities and accessing resources designed to help you understand appropriate academic practices and standards.
Academic Integrity at CDU
Artificial Intelligence and First Nation Leadership
We are committed to ensuring Artificial Intelligence systems respect and protect First Nations knowledge, data sovereignty, and cultural integrity. We engage with First Nations communities to ensure AI applications support rather than undermine Indigenous leadership and self-determination.
Artificial Intelligence in research
AI is increasingly used to support research across disciplines at the University. We encourage researchers to use AI thoughtfully, in line with ethical standards and University guidelines.
