Effective networking is crucial for building relationships that support your development as an academic. But networking is, for many, a daunting mater. This session will provide an overview on the benefits of creating connections and provide tips on how to engage in effective networking to achieve these connections. It will touch upon the following topics:
- Different types of networks
- Connections as a roadmap to opportunities for collaboration and the benefits of collaboration, including across disciplines and institutes
- The importance of a circle of circle of critical friends: what is a professional friendship?
- Mentoring
- Forms of academic volunteering / service roles as a means of creating professional networks
- Overcoming shyness: how to approach your role models / senior academics / others

This workshop is designed to assist research students who are close to completion to focus their efforts, deal with specific obstacles, increase writing productivity and maintain momentum. It will also assist students in prioritising and planning their final months.
