2025 Alumni Award for Early Career Achievement - Sharni Sloan

Sharni is an emerging leader in midwifery and perinatal mental health whose compassion and expertise are improving care for women and families across the Northern Territory. Sharni has dedicated her career to delivering evidence-based, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed care for women throughout the childbearing journey.

During her studies, she was recognised with five scholarships, including the prestigious HESTA (NT) Student Scholarship in 2021,and served as the student representative for the Australian College of Midwives, demonstrating early leadership and commitment to advancing maternal health practice.

Since graduating in 2023, Sharni has worked across a range of specialist roles, including as a bereavement midwife, pregnancy options midwife, and in perinatal and infant mental health. Her work provides compassionate support to families experiencing pregnancy loss, complex decisions, or postnatal challenges, ensuring care that honours autonomy, dignity, and emotional safety.

Sharni also delivers professional education to strengthen the capacity of maternal and child health clinicians across the NT, promoting trauma-informed and culturally safe practice. Currently completing postgraduate study in perinatal mental health, she is focused on improving outcomes for Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and culturally and linguistically diverse families.

Through her leadership, clinical excellence, and advocacy, Sharni is making a lasting impact on maternal and infant wellbeing across northern Australia.
