First, let me take a selfie: TAFE photography winner’s big adventure

May 2025 edition
Marvin Hua

Hospitality student Marvin Hua never imagined taking a quick selfie with his best friend would win him any accolades – but the happy snap is now a shining example of the unique experiences afforded by TAFE.

Marvin studied a Certificate IV in Kitchen Management and a Diploma of Hospitality Management at Charles Darwin University (CDU).

One of the biggest challenges of his course was putting his skills to the test for real customers at the Palmerston campus’s training restaurant.

“It was an assessment I needed to pass to become a qualified chef, and I was really worried that day,” he said.

“I told myself that a smile would manifest a good result, so I decided to take a selfie to refresh myself and savour the shared memory with my best friend, Arifin.

“The photo really showed that all our hard work was about to pay off.”

The photo was crowned the NT winner of the 2024 Heart of TAFE photography competition.

Entries for this year’s competition are currently open.

Any TAFE student can enter their photos in this year’s competition before the July 7 deadline.
