Hosted by the Northern Territory Pre-Vocational Obstetrics & Gynaecology Society (PVOGS NT).

You are invited to a screening of the Djäkamirr short film at Charles Darwin University. Meet other professionals working in First Nations Maternal and Child Health space and stick around for a brief discussion and Q&A with film director and lead researcher from the Caring for Mum on Country project, Dr Sarah Ireland.

Film description:
For over 60,000 years, Yolŋu childbirth happened on Country with skilled djäkamirr (midwifery caretakers or doulas). The arrival of Western missionaries in the 1920s and the removal of childbirth to hospitals have left mothers disconnected from their support systems, with profound health inequities across the region. Filmed over two years in Arnhem Land, this documentary invites audiences into Yolŋu women’s culture and their vision to reclaim birthing practices and be part of the solutions to improve their community’s health and wellbeing. This story of hope shows how Yolŋu and Balanda (non-Yolŋu Australians) can work together to drive meaningful change and strengthen community-led health care and access. The documentary is a creative output from the Caring for Mum on Country project. Find out more about the film at birthingoncountry.com/djakamirr.
