Northern Institute is a regional leader in high-quality social and public policy research. Our research teams are led by nationally and internationally recognised human geographers.

Northern Institute is partnership-focused. We work with multiple stakeholders to ensure outcomes meet needs and impact positively on people's lives. 

Northern Institute encompasses four major research themes:

  • Contemporary Indigenous Knowledge & Governance – designing new institutional and governance practices.
  • Demography & Growth Planning – focused on dynamic remote and sparsely populated areas.
  • Evaluation & Knowledge Impact – evaluating public service delivery strategies, policy and community partnerships.
  • Regional, Economic & Workforce Development – exploring integrated and sustainable regional and economic development in diverse contexts.
