CDU nursing student gains insight about Indonesia’s health system
A Charles Darwin University (CDU) nursing student has been selected to complete a study tour to learn about the challenges of Indonesia’s public health sector to aid her career in nursing in Australia.
Third-year nursing student, Shamsiya Hassam Mooradun, of Perth, recently attended the Australian Consortium for ‘In-Country’ Indonesian Studies (ACICIS) public health study tour on November 20.
The two-week intensive program, which is run in partnership with the University of Indonesia (UI) in Yogyakarta and Jakarta is for students of public health and related disciplines intended to equip students with practical knowledge of Indonesia’s public health sector.
Ms Hassam Mooradun attended the program online due to COVID-19 and said that the program was a great way to gain knowledge of a different country’s public health system.
“I decided to do the program to gain knowledge and an understanding of public health, and the challenges associated from a different country,” Ms Hassam Mooradun said.
“Overall, the program was an eye opener to the Indonesian public health system and the various challenges associated and it has definitely given me a better understanding of health challenges faced in a different country.”
CDU’s Associate Lecturer in Nursing Donna Diffley coordinates the Nursing Practice Project within the Bachelor of Nursing and said that Shamsiya received an outstanding result upon completing the health study tour.
“Shamsiya received outstanding feedback from ACICIS and achieved wonderful results throughout the program,” Ms Diffley said
“Completing the program is a wonderful achievement, and it will provide Shamsiya with the important skills and knowledge to further her nursing career.”
As a part of the program, representatives from various organisations presented seminars on topics including nutrition, food safety, non-communicable diseases, family planning and smoking among youth.
