CDU hairdressing apprentices raised $1000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Services Alice Springs Division.

The Charles Darwin University TAFE Alice Springs hairdressing apprentices are receiving practical training in mullet cutting to help a local charity raise funds during the 2023 Red Centre Nats.

CDU Mullet Madness partnered with Mulletfest, a not-for-profit that celebrates a unique hairstyle for a cause. The students offered Mullets by donation Thursday evening, at the Fringe Festival on the Town Council Lawns. They raised $1000 and all proceeds will go to the Royal Flying Doctor Service Alice Springs Division.

CDU TAFE Alice Springs Hairdressing lecturer Julia Braddon said it was an exciting opportunity to expand the students practical experience for a good cause.

“The idea came about from one conversation and grew into a full community event where our students learning is at the forefront, the students cut over 25 mullets” Ms Braddon said.

“We are grateful for the support of Town Council for hosting us and for the opportunity to partner with Mulletfest.”

Mulletfest creator Laura Johnson said it has been a privilege to meet and work with the students and staff at CDU.

“I loved getting to spend some time with the students sharing my knowledge and story with them,” Ms Johnson said, who is a hairdresser by trade.

“It’s great to get to offer this unique opportunity by providing practical experiences at the Red Centre Nats.”

As part of this partnership the students will be working with Mulletfest organisers to help with styling and ushering for the mullet parade on Saturday night and family day on Sunday.

CDU Hairdressing student Esme Pye said the team was really looking forward to the weekend.

“I am pumped to be able to be part of such a fun event and really appreciate the opportunities that we are given while studying in Alice Springs,” Ms Pye said.

“I am grateful for the community support we have received so far and hope they keep participating in the amazing events happening this weekend.”

Mullets the students cut may be eligible to be entered into some of the Mulletfest categories.

The CDU Alice Springs Hair and Beauty salon is open to the public Monday to Wednesday.
