Charles Darwin University will offer motoring enthusiasts an opportunity to test their mechanical skills in a race against the clock at the Red CentreNATS in Alice Springs next weekend.

CDU School of Trades Team Leader Jamie Finn said the “Shannon’s flying spanners competition” would see who could strip down and rebuild an engine in the fastest time.

The winning team will receive two tickets, flights and accommodation to the Canberra Summernats in January next year.

Mr Finn said the “captain” of each team would wear a head camera with vision streamed live on big screens so visitors would not miss any action.

“CDU staff are looking forward to participating in the event, interacting with visitors and showcasing our vocational and higher education courses,” he said.

Mr Finn said CDU would provide an opportunity for visitors to test their skills as a welder or a civil plant operator, using the same simulators that proved popular at last year’s event.

“We will also invite members of the public to have a go at operating a mini excavator, under the supervision of our trainers.”

CDU has secured prime positioning at this year’s Red CentreNATS, and would be present in and outside the Greatorex Pavillion.

The Red CentreNATS coincides with National Skills Week this year, which has presented CDU with an opportunity to showcase trade skills, support the local community and promote its courses.
