Global impact of Greek migration to be examined at conference

Some of the world’s most eminent authorities on Greek and Hellenic language and culture will come together at Charles Darwin University (CDU) on Saturday, 1 June for the second International Conference on the Hellenic Diaspora.

The event is the first of a three-leg conference program, with the next events to be staged in Rhodes and Thessaloniki, Greece later in June and in early July.

CDU Hellenic Studies program Associate Professor George Frazis said the research shared at the conferences was key to contemporary understandings of the influence of Greek migration throughout world over many hundreds of years.

“I am delighted to be part of a project that involves some of the most renowned academics in their fields from Australia and around the globe,” Dr Frazis said.

“On Saturday we will hear scholarly papers based on research conducted in five different Greek and Australian universities.

“This collaboration is vital to compiling a broad knowledge-base of past and present Greek communities in Romania, in Asia Minor, America, Australia, and especially the Greek diaspora in the Northern Territory.”

Dr Frazis said the relationship forged between CDU, the University of the Aegean, and the University of Macedonia to establish and facilitate the conference program was of enormous benefit to the institutions’ Greek language and culture students.

“Being able to host the first leg of the program in Darwin is also an excellent way of promoting awareness of the Northern Territory in numerous other parts of the world,” Dr Frazis said.

The conference is free and open to the public, and no registration is required.
