Lecture to explore divisions in Israel
An award-winning writer will explore divisions in contemporary Israeli society when he presents a public lecture on Casuarina campus next week.
Dr Ruvik Rosenthal, a long-time journalist, author and linguist, will speak on the topic “Israel: A story of a divided society” at the lecture hosted by Charles Darwin University’s School of Creative Arts and Humanities.
Dr Rosenthal said that on the surface, Israel appeared to be a strong and united country, but the reality was very different.
“Israeli society is deeply divided, torn by political, ethnic, cultural and religious conflicts and tensions,” he said.
The lecture will focus on how these divisions developed during Israel’s short history as a modern state, and how they were shaping life in the country today.
An expert on modern Hebrew, Dr Rosenthal has written 20 books including a “Dictionary of Israeli Slang”. He also has written about the Israeli kibbutz, war and bereavement, and stories of the early years of Tel Aviv.
He won the Sokolov Prize for Journalism in 2004, the Ramat Gan Children’s Book Prize in 2012, and the Meir Ariel Prize of Creativity in Hebrew in 2013.
Dr Rosenthal has held the position of coordinator of Journalism Studies at the Open University of Israel. He has taught courses on language, writing and editing, and language and democracy at Haifa and Bar-Ilan universities.
The lecture will be held in Building Blue 1.1.01 on Casuarina campus on Thursday, 29 September from 5.30pm until 7pm.
