A Charles Darwin University student will engage with students across the Outback to promote the benefits of the New Colombo Plan (NCP).

The NCP is an Australian Government initiative to lift knowledge of the Indo-Pacific by supporting a new generation of Australians to engage with the region. It has supported more than 31,000 undergraduate students to live, study and undertake internships in the Indo-Pacific since it started five years ago.

Bachelor of Laws student Roxanne Donohue was selected to represent the Northern Territory as the 2018-2019 NCP Alumni Ambassador, joining 42 other university students in this prestigious role.

Roxanne has been tasked to promote the NCP and highlight the importance of building relationships with the Indo-Pacific region. The NCP offers short and long-term scholarships to study abroad for higher education students.

“My goal is to visit high schools across the Territory, particularly in remote areas, and promote the program to the next generation of university students,” Roxanne said. “I will have a presence at orientations, careers expos and other events to not only highlight the value of this program but also the opportunities it provides by participating.

“Not only does it open doors professionally, but it's also an important way to strengthen Australia’s ties with this neighbouring region.

“It’s not simply an overseas study scholarship; NCP alumni are set to play an increasingly important role in our relationships with the Indo-Pacific region and a driving force in Australia's future prosperity.”

Roxanne recently returned from Canberra where she attended an intensive orientation with professional development and networking, developed a work plan and attended a reception with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Governor-General.

"We have been provided full support to develop initiatives and to build a strong alumni fraternity," she said.

Roxanne studied at the China University of Political Science and Law as part of the NCP program earlier this year.
