Talks to reveal true Territory tales

Forgotten stories of Northern Territory history will be revealed by Charles Darwin University researchers and other experts during a free public forum next week.

A brave Indigenous girl, Darwin’s first Greek settlers, and a Japanese prisoner of war captured on NT soil will be among the characters explored at the History Colloquium.

CDU North Australian and regional studies lecturer Dr Steven Farram said the NT was home to a range of defining moments in Australian history.

“The colloquium will examine the region’s vibrant history, covering a range of aspects including World War II and the early 20th Century,” Dr Farram said.

“Kakadu National Park fire regimes and the arrival of Australia’s first Timor-Leste asylum seekers, via Darwin, will be among the intriguing histories uncovered.”

The History Colloquium will be held at the Northern Territory Library at Parliament House in Darwin on Saturday 15 October from 9.20am until 4.30pm.

The event is supported by the Northern Territory Library, the Professional Historians Association NT and the Australian National University’s Centre for Environmental History.
