The Northern Territory Herbarium houses a large collection of preserved plant specimens (around 290,000 objects) across two facilities in Darwin and Alice Springs. It provides information on the taxonomy, naming, ecology and classification of the NT’s flora.
Chief botanist Nick Cuff, botanist Lou Elliott and collection manager Aiden Webb will present the seminar ‘Documenting diversity, preserving knowledge and informing science’, representing the NT Herbarium which is part of the Flora and Fauna Division of the NT Government’s Department of Lands, Planning and Environment.
The NT supports a diverse flora with a high representation of short-range and endemic taxa. However, in relative terms the knowledge of the NT’s plants is still a ‘work in progress’.
The NT Herbarium holds and curates the most significant collection of specimens, data and knowledge of the NT’s flora. This infrastructure is a key asset in working toward improving the overall understanding of the NT’s flora.
In this seminar, Nick, Lou and Aiden will provide an overview of the NT Herbarium, current challenges and opportunities in botanical research, their research focus areas, and how these activities link to management and conservation.
