Dr Nicola Hanrahan is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods at Charles Darwin University. Nicola’s work focuses on the ecology and conservation of threatened bats, in particular the ghost bat (Macroderma gigas), using acoustic, genetic and movement data to support evidence-based management decisions.

Ghost bat populations are declining due to a range of predominantly anthropogenic threats affecting their subterranean roosts and foraging habitat. Effective conservation planning and impact mitigation have been limited by key knowledge gaps in the species’ population dynamics and ecology. The Macroderma Initiative is an Australian Research Council Linkage-funded project investigating ghost bat roosting and foraging habitat requirements, population dynamics, and conservation needs.  

In the seminar ‘The Macroderma Initiative: conserving ghost bats in a changing landscape’, Nicola will present some of the team's work to date and will outline future objectives aimed at improving conservation outcomes for the species.
