The Graduate Certificate of Older Person Nursing Care is designed for nurses working with older people and their families in residential aged care, community, and sub-acute or geriatric care settings. As a student of this course, you will build upon your clinical knowledge and skills in this area of specialised practice. Delivered online and studied part-time over one year, the course draws on contemporary research and evidence to support you in advocating for residents and patients, and in leading within extended care environments. The curriculum is underpinned by person-centred and family-centred models of care, reflecting best practice in aged care and addressing the increasing complexity and acuity of the ageing population. It also integrates safety and quality standards as it explores the healthcare needs of older people, their families, and the broader community.
Career opportunities
Graduating from this degree will lead to career opportunities in public and private extended care and aged care environments. Completion of post graduate education is a necessity for a wide range of career advances such as management, leadership, or education roles or academic or research positions. On completion of your Graduate Certificate, you may choose to continue your studies in a Master of Clinical Nursing degree. This degree can be utilised as the first step in your career progression towards a Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner).

What will I study?
The Graduate Certificate of Older Person Nursing Care provides students with essential knowledge informed by evidence-based practice. Students will complete four 10-credit-point (CP) units in areas including safety and quality in healthcare, care of the older persons, and mental health of the older persons.
Course structure
In Semester 1, students will complete two 10 CP units focused on safety and quality in aged care and care of the older persons. In Semester 2, students will extend their knowledge by completing two 10 CP units in care of the older adult and management of complex conditions, and mental health of the older persons. The units in the course are carefully constructed and informed by current healthcare needs to support the development of advanced nursing knowledge required when caring for older persons.
A candidate must successfully complete units totalling 40 credit points (cp) as detailed below. All units are valued at 10 credit points unless otherwise indicated.

Admission criteria
All applicants must meet the following requirements:
Successful completion of a recognised bachelor degree in nursing (or equivalent international qualification); and
- Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Division 1 Registered Nurse
- Hospital-trained nurses with current AHPRA registration as a Division 1 registered nurse may also be considered.
- It is expected that applicants will have relevant employment in the field of nursing specialisation.
