Overview
This course will develop your research skills for application in the workplace or serve as a starting point for more advanced research training. The Graduate Certificate of Research provides an initiation into independent research. Graduates gain a robust understanding of research and fundamental knowledge, empowering them to carry out and proficiently present their research across a chosen field of interest. Equipped with the requisite theoretical and methodological knowledge, students will learn to conduct ethical, creative and/or practical research in a range of contexts.
Graduates will be eligible to apply for admission to a Master's by Research program, subject to meeting academic performance requirements and the availability of suitable research supervision. Additionally, admission to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) will be determined based on your Grade Point Average (GPA), relevant research experience, and the availability of appropriate supervision.
Career opportunities
Graduates will acquire fundamental knowledge to carry out independent research in a particular field. This course will give graduates the research training and abilities they need to apply their foundational research skills in the workplace or to continue their education in a research higher degree.

International tuition fees
The annual tuition fee for full time study in 2026 is AUD $18,836.00. This equates to $ $4,709.00 per 10 credit point unit (0.125 EFTSL).
These fees are subject to increases annually, effective at the start of each calendar year.

What will I study?
The course comprises 40 credit points of core and elective units. The core unit is 20 credit points. Additionally, students may choose from specialist electives totalling 20 credit points focusing on business, creative arts, social science, language and linguistics.

Entry requirements
Admission criteria
Applicants must have successfully completed one of the following (or an equivalent international qualification):
- a recognised four-year honours degree; or
- a three-year bachelor degree and either:
- One year (full-time equivalent) of professional or research experience in a field relevant to your area of research; or
- One year (full-time equivalent) of professional or research experience in a field relevant to your area of research; or
- A Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Master's degree.
Applicants who do not meet the academic requirements may be considered for admission if they have at least four years (full-time equivalent) of employment experience. Employment should be in a field relevant to your area of proposed research. Applicants applying through this pathway are required to submit the following with their SATAC application:
- A current CV; and
- A Statement of Purpose outlining how the course aligns with their career goals and research interests; and
- A letter from their employer, on official company letterhead, confirming their job title, a summary of duties, and dates of employment. Employment must be in a field relevant to the proposed area of research.
All applicants must contact the Faculty of Arts and Society at fas@cdu.edu.au before submitting an application to discuss potential research areas. Admission is subject to alignment between the proposed research area and the applicant's background and experience.
International entry pathway
Applicants who have completed the CDU English for Academic Purposes 4 (ZEAP40) or the Accelerated International Masters Qualifying Program (ZAMQP2, ZAMQP1) are eligible for entry.

DOMESTIC STUDENTS
To gain entry into Charles Darwin University, all Higher Education applicants must satisfy the University's English Language Proficiency Requirements for their chosen course of study. All applicants will be required to supply evidence of this at the time of application.
The minimum English language requirement for this course can be met by evidencing of one of the following:
| Year 12 | Successful completion of Year 12 within Australia, or an equivalent qualification from an approved country where English is the official language (refer to our approved standard and extended lists included below). |
| 0.5 FTE Higher Education Study | Successful completion of at least 0.5FTE of higher education study from Australia or an approved country where English is the official language (refer to our approved standard and extended lists included below). If studies were completed from a country on the extended list, they must have been completed within the past five (5) years. |
| CDU Enabling Course | Successful completion of a Charles Darwin University enabling program of at least 0.5FTE (40 credit points). |
| TAFE Qualification | Successful completion of a recognised TAFE qualification at a Certificate III level or higher from Australia. |
| AHPRA Registration | Current AHPRA registration as a Division 1 or Division 2 nurse. Registration must be current at the time of course commencement. |
| English Test^ | Completion of an approved English test within two years of commencement, meeting the minimum scores outlined in the table below. |

IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted, allowing candidates to retake a single skill within 60 days of sitting their initial test. One Skill Retake results are valid for two years from the date of the first test (not from the date of the Retake test) to the date of commencement at CDU.
CDU accepts combined results from two test sittings of IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, or TOEFL, taken within a six-month period, if:
- Both tests were under the same testing system; and
- The overall score in both tests meets the overall minimum; and
- The applicant achieved the section minimum for each section in at least one test.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
To gain entry into Charles Darwin University, all Higher Education applicants must satisfy the University's English Language Proficiency Requirements for their chosen course of study.

Applications must be submitted online through our application portal, Studylink. You'll need a valid email address to create your online account. Once you have started your application, you will be able to save it and resume it later. There is no application fee when you apply online.
