Charles Darwin University is undertaking a review of historical delivery within the Electrotechnology (UEE) Training Package after identifying gaps in assessment evidence for the unit UEECD0007, Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace.

What has happened?
A comprehensive review of historical delivery within the Electrotechnology (UEE) Training Package identified gaps in assessment evidence relating to specific requirements within a single workplace health and safety unit of competency, UEECD0007 – Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace.
Which qualifications or courses are affected?
The review affects some students who completed:
- UEESS00174 Electrical Safety Testing of Electrical Cord Connected Equipment and Cord Assemblies Skill Set (Test and Tag)
- VTP360 Restricted Electrical
- UEE22020 Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start).
How many students are affected by this?
CDU is contacting 193 former students whose records require further review. Some may be able to demonstrate competency through other certified training or existing workplace evidence and may therefore not need to undertake the assessment.
When was the affected training delivered?
The affected delivery occurred between January 2025 and April 2026.
What exactly was identified?
The review identified gaps in assessment evidence relating to specific emergency response requirements within the unit UEECD0007.
Does this affect electrical apprentices or licensed electricians?
No. This matter does not affect electrical apprentices or licensed electricians.
Is this related to the carpentry review?
No. While identified through the same commitment to reviewing historical training delivery, this issue is significantly different. It relates to one workplace safety unit, and the gap assessment can be completed in one day.
Is my qualification cancelled?
No. Students’ qualifications are not being cancelled at this stage. The gap assessment process is designed to ensure all competency requirements have been met, and qualifications continue to meet national standards.
What if I have completed any other UEE units of competency or have further supporting information demonstrating competency?
You may not be required to complete the gap assessment if you can demonstrate competency through certified training records or suitable existing workplace evidence. CDU will review any information provided and advise whether further assessment is required.
What do I need to provide to demonstrate competency?
You may provide a certified Statement of Attainment showing that you have completed relevant training, or suitable workplace evidence (video or statement signed by employer) demonstrating that you can safely and correctly respond to workplace emergencies involving electrical hazards.
Any workplace evidence must address the following requirements:

Evidence must be from an operational workplace environment or a simulated workplace environment for Low Voltage (LV) Rescue and Simulated Fire Emergency in accordance with workplace management procedures and safe work practices.
Do I have to complete the gap assessment?
If you cannot provide sufficient evidence ofdemonstratingcompetency, you will need to complete the gap assessment. If a student chooses not to participate, CDU may be unable to confirm that all requirements for the unit have been met, which could affect the student’s unit or qualification outcome.
How long will the gap assessment take?
The required assessment can be completed in a single day and includes a practical assessment and a short theory assessment.
Will I be compensated for the time required to undertake the gap assessment?
Yes. CDU recognises that participating in the gap assessment may require students to take time away from work or other commitments.
CDU will provide compensation of $110 per hour to the student's employer, or directly to the student if they are a sole trader, for the hours the student is required to complete the gap assessment.
CDU will provide information about the payment process and any documentation required to support the claim.
Is there a cost?
No. CDU will provide the gap assessment at no cost to affected students.
I live interstate or remotely. What support is available?
CDU recognises that some students may face challenges attending a scheduled location to complete the gap assessment. Assistance may be available to reduce barriers to participation, including support for reasonable travel and related costs where appropriate. Students should contact CDU to discuss their individual circumstances.
What if I have changed my address or contact details?

When will the gap assessment be offered?
The gap assessment will be delivered between August and September 2026 at a range of locations, including Casuarina Campus, Darwin schools, Berrimah Correctional Centre, Darwin Correctional Centre, and Alice Springs. Most Darwin-based assessment sessions will occur throughout mid-August to early September, with Alice Springs delivery scheduled for mid-September 2026.
CDU will contact affected students directly with information about available sessions and booking arrangements.
Students who cannot attend an available session should contact CDU as soon as possible to discuss alternative arrangements.
What topics will be covered in the gap assessment?
The gap assessment relates to specific emergency response requirements within UEECD0007. It will assess the student’s ability to undertake a low-voltage rescue and respond appropriately to a simulated workplace fire.
What happens if I don’t complete the gap assessment?
If you are required to complete the gap assessment but do not participate, and CDU cannot confirm competency through other acceptable evidence, the University may be required to amend or revoke the relevant unit or qualification outcome.
Why is CDU doing this?
CDU has an obligation to ensure that every student has demonstrated all competency requirements for their nationally recognised training.
