Yuvraj Pokhrel: A journey of purpose, passion and progress

International student Yuvraj Pokhrel’s journey to Charles Darwin University (CDU) started in Nepal, his homeland. With a degree in Rural Development already in hand, he dreamed of finding a way to make a real and sustainable impact on the world. To take that next big step, he needed an opportunity.

For Yuvraj, the opportunity came in the form of a full scholarship, first to a qualifying program with education services provider UP Education, and then for a Master of Business Administration in Sustainable Enterprise at CDU.

Yuvraj’s scholarship was made possible through a special partnership between CDU and Maiti Nepal, a non-profit organisation that protects and empowers vulnerable women and children in Nepal. Maiti Nepal fights against human trafficking through rescue, rehabilitation and education, giving survivors a future filled with hope. His journey was connected to this powerful mission from the start.

He knew that big ideas also need practical skills to bring them to life. “I understand that sustainable development also requires strong management skills,” Yuvraj says. “CDU’s MBA covers a wide range of subjects that build expertise applicable across industries. The practical, hands-on approach really motivates me.”

Learning by doing, and giving back

Once at CDU, Yuvraj dived straight into campus life. He didn’t just study; he became involved. He joined the student engagement team, helping other students connect and feel at home. He also works as a photographer for the university's media team, capturing the moments that make up student life.

"CDU supports students in every aspect of personal and professional development," he says. "I truly appreciate how the university respects and uplifts students throughout their journey."

Feeling that sense of community, Yuvraj wanted to give back and share his own culture. He co-founded the CDU Nepalese Students Association to bring students from his homeland together and introduce vibrant festivals like Diwali and Holi to the wider campus community.

"I never feel alone at CDU," Yuvraj says. "The people are kind, and the environment is welcoming. I feel fortunate to live and study in Darwin, and I’m committed to supporting other international students on their journey too."

The journey goes on

Even though he has completed his MBA, Yuvraj is still contributing to the CDU community, working with the university while planning his next steps – including exploring more of Australia and preparing to study Law.

But for Yuvraj, the most important thing is to honour the opportunity he received by giving back. His goal is to support Maiti Nepal and help survivors of trafficking find their own pathways to empowerment.

“I will continue to support individuals from Maiti Nepal to combat human trafficking and the sexual exploitation of children and women,” he says. “It’s my responsibility to ensure they have access to education, opportunity, and a future full of dignity and hope.”

Looking back, Yuvraj feels immense gratitude.

“I always thank the people at CDU from the bottom of my heart for shaping my journey and giving me this opportunity.

“I haven’t seen other universities offering programs like this – ones that truly empower courageous and talented international students to succeed in Australia.”
