Pia Harkness is a PhD graduate (2020) in the Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods (RIEL), under the supervision of Associate Prof. Natasha Stacey. Her PhD examined the implications of marine conservation and rural development policies and practices for the local communities they are designed to affect, in Savu Raijua District eastern Indonesia.
In the seminar ‘Inclusive research at RIEL: examples from fisheries’ we will hear from two researchers from Charles Darwin University’s Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods (RIEL) whose work focuses on gender and fisheries in the Northern Territory.
We believe learning should not be limited in the classroom. Through the Professional Practice Program (PPP), we provide on-the-job placement opportunities for students enrolled in the Master of Accounting (Professional Practice) and Master of Business Administration (Professional Practice) to get training and experience in a real-life workplace environment. The PPP gives employers the opportunity to work with well-trained graduates and evaluate their suitability as a future employee. If the student is eventually employed, they are already up to speed with the provider’s workplace culture, targets and relationships.
As part of her Bachelor of Environmental Science, CDU student Erica Smith seized the opportunity to cross Brazil off her travel bucket list as she took part in the two-week Brazilian Amazon Field Intensive (BAFI) offered by CDU's College of Engineering, IT and Environment. Erica is currently half-way through her degree and determined to major in Wildlife Conservation. For the past five years, Erica studied part time so she could fit in her work schedule. Last year, she moved to Darwin from a remote community in East Arnhem Land to transition into full time study at Casuarina Campus and make faster progress toward completing her studies.
