Overview

The Master of Professional Accounting (Professional Practice) provides you with contemporary accounting knowledge and professional capabilities required for effective practice in a dynamic business environment. The course develops strong technical and conceptual accounting skills and enhances your ability to critically explore, analyse and synthesise accounting principles, methods and techniques within real-world contexts.

The course incorporates a professional practice component designed to support your transition to the workplace through work-integrated learning. You may complete this requirement through a professional placement or an industry engagement option.

Students who select the professional placement pathway undertake preparatory training focused on working effectively in an organisational setting, followed by a supervised placement of approximately 300 hours. This option provides an opportunity to apply accounting knowledge and professional skills in a workplace environment.

Alternatively, you can choose the industry-engagement option, which develops professional readiness through structured simulations, industry-informed projects, and authentic engagement with professional practice.

Career opportunities

The Master of Professional Accounting (Professional Practice) provides a comprehensive foundation in accounting theory, principles, and practical skills, equipping graduates for a wide range of professional accounting and finance roles. Graduates may pursue careers in areas such as financial and management accounting, auditing and assurance, taxation, corporate finance, and accounting operations within business, government, or not-for-profit organisations.

Practical experience

You will complete a 300-hour work placement over eight to ten weeks if undertaking the professional placement option.>

Professional recognition

The completion of this accredited postgraduate program meets the educational requirements for professional membership with CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ).

What will I study?

Over two years of full-time study (or part-time equivalent), you'll develop the skillset through units including financial and management accounting, auditing and assurance, taxation and regulatory compliance, corporate finance and financial management, accounting information systems and technology, and data analytics. Each unit combines theoretical foundations with practical application, enabling you to analyse, interpret, and apply accounting concepts to authentic business scenarios.

Course structure

In addition to the core accounting and business units, the course incorporates a professional practice component that bridges academic learning with workplace readiness. You may undertake this requirement through either a professional placement, which provides supervised work experience in an organisational setting, or an industry-engagement option, which develops professional skills through structured simulations, industry-informed projects, and authentic engagement with professional practice. This component ensures that you are prepared to navigate the expectations and challenges of a professional accounting environment. The professional practice component is typically completed in the final semester of study.
