Campuses

CDU’s Academy of the Arts teaches through three campuses – Alice Springs, Casuarina and Darwin City.  Staff offices are located at the Alice Springs and Casuarina campuses.

We aim to regularly visit and connect with other CDU campuses and centres, including the Sydney campus and the centres at Katherine and Nhulunbuy.

Facilities and resources

The Academy of the Arts students and staff teach, learn and research using some excellent specialist facilities and equipment.

In Darwin, we will have access to a state-of-the-art new building due to open in mid-2024. This new City campus will house the CDU Art Gallery and three visual arts studio spaces for art-making. The City campus also provides facilities to host conferences and symposia and an outdoor space for music performances.

The Casuarina campus is 20 minutes north of Darwin City, close to Casuarina Beach and the Casuarina shopping complex. At this campus, students can learn and perform in the CDU Theatre (220-seat venue) with industry-level lighting and sound systems and present artwork in the Nan Giese Gallery.

The Alice Springs campus teaches visual arts, music and screen media. The art studios in Alice Springs have become well-known for teaching ceramics with the kiln in operation year-round. The art studios at Casuarina in Darwin are known for the printmaking studio and more recently for the experimental use of the risograph printing process.

Visual arts students are well-supported with access to various studio spaces (for screen printing, printmaking, sculpture and painting and drawing). Students at Casuarina can access a well-equipped workshop supported by a Technical Officer. Postgraduate students in visual arts are allocated studio space.

All students have access to computer labs and digital recording studios (both Mac and PC) to learn how to produce audio and music, film and online screen media, photographic and digital imagery and design.

All students are encouraged to engage with and learn through the activities of the CDU Art Gallery located in Darwin, which programs exhibitions and artist talks annually and which houses a significant art collection.
