Father of three graduates with a Masters from CDU
How do you juggle a full-time job, family life, and studying for a Master’s degree? For Paul Augustin, a father of three living in Nhulunbuy in East Arnhem Land who recently graduated with a Master of Environmental Management, it was all about determination and finding the right support.
After more than two decades working in natural resource management, Paul decided to return to study to further develop his knowledge and skills.
However, the challenge of managing work, family and study commitments led him to take a break partway through the course.
“After two years of study I took a year off and almost quit, knowing I could withdraw with a postgraduate diploma was tempting, even though I only had my research unit left,” Paul said.
With encouragement from family and friends, Paul decided to return and complete his final module.
“I had come so far, I knew it would be worth finishing my research unit,” he said.
“I wanted to prove not only to myself but also my kids to keep going, even when the path gets tough.”
Paul said the support he received from CDU staff was instrumental to him continuing with his studies.
The lecturers were fantastic, and some were even world leaders in their respective fields of expertise. I felt genuinely supported and encouraged by the range of assistance available, which reassured me about the challenges ahead.
“The ongoing support from staff—particularly the course coordinator—far exceeded my expectations,” Paul said.
Completing the degree was a personal milestone for Paul, and a reminder for him and his children that while persistence pays off, our community is so important to our individual success.
