All that glitters is gold: Loan's story

Alumni Awards finalist Loan Nguyen

Loan began her Certificate III in Beauty Services after facing considerable obstacles in relocating to Australia and studying English. Gaining a qualification has completely turned her life around and she now believes anything is possible for her in the future.

When Loan started selling cosmetics online while studying English, she gained a whole new appreciation of the beauty industry and wanted to learn more.

What started as a hobby quickly turned into a passion and CDU was the answer to help her career soar.

Hands-on experience

Despite some initial communication challenges, Loan was prepared to succeed in her studies. Putting in extra hours, slowing down and learning English simultaneously was a juggle, but with the support and guidance of her lecturers she achieved her goals.

“The lecturers are so supportive and experienced and share their hands-on knowledge,” says Loan.

All the lessons included theory and practical. We got to train with real clients in a busy environment and I got so much out of that.

"I learnt how to deal with people, how to express myself and how to solve problems," she adds. "Those are some of the most important skills that I still use today.”

All action

Loan Nguyen Beauty Graduate Alumni Awards

After graduating and gaining experience offering beauty treatments to the local community, Loan set up her own successful business, Karama Home Spa.

“I started out with a little beauty room at home to gain more experience and now I have a big salon with regular clients and I’m confident to start offering more services and employment to others as I continue to learn and grow," she says.

CDU provided me a foundation to step into my future.

A beautiful result

Having successfully overcome challenges to achieve her dream career, Loan has some invaluable advice for her younger self.

“If you think about what you love and what you have a passion for, step up and follow your dream," she says.

Don’t let a lack of confidence or language barriers hold you back. If I can do it, so can you.

CDU has recognised Loan's success with a nomination for the Alumni Awards.
