Yipapirraya arnuwujaputi... Tide going out, tide coming in…

Celebrating the Tiwi artists and founders of Jilamara Arts and Crafts
Yipapirraya Arnuwujaputi exhibition

Yipapirraya arnuwujaputi …Tide going out, tide coming in … honours the legacy of the Tiwi artists who were the founders of Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association, established at Milikapiti, Yermalner / Melville Island, 1988. This past generation of Tiwi artists deserve to be celebrated because their artistic accomplishments have inspired a new generation of contemporary Tiwi artists. Although the tide goes out, it also comes back in, ensuring a new generation of artists assume their role as custodians and makers of Tiwi art.

Yipapirraya arnuwujaputiTide going out, tide coming in… features artworks predominantly drawn from two collections: the Muluwurri Museum Collection and the Charles Darwin University Art Collection. Recent gifts of Tiwi art from Anne and Laurie Marchment to the CDU Art Collection are featured in this exhibition, including works on canvas, paper, limited-edition prints, sculptures and textiles. Anne Marchment was involved in the establishment of Jilamara Arts and Crafts and Laurie Marchment (1937-2020) was principal at Milikapiti Primary School (1985-92).

With each passing generation the mantle of Tiwi culture is passed from one generation to another. The tide goes out, the tide comes in. The old and the new flow into one another, as ancient and contemporary merge into a vibrant and distinctive visual art, unique to the Tiwi artists that come together to form Jilamara Arts and Crafts.
