Iqra has always had a fascination for numbers, so studying Master of Accounting (Professional Practice) at CDU simply added up.

“I came to Australia with my bachelor’s degree from Pakistan,” says Iqra. “I wanted to expand my financial knowledge and had always been keen to complete my Masters,” says Iqra. “My goal was to combine hands-on experience with academic learning, which became possible through my placement and assessments at CDU.”

The total package

Darwin appealed to Iqra for its laid-back lifestyle, and she quickly fell in love with the multicultural city and the exclusive experiences, sites and adventures on offer. The standard of education at CDU cemented her love.

“All tutors are completely committed to ensuring every student receives the best of their time,” says Iqra. “I wasn’t just taught the academics, I also learnt how to present myself in the corporate world.

“The university’s advanced infrastructure, contemporary facilities and professional staff enable students to complete their studies more effectively and efficiently.”

Adding up the positives

As part of her Master of Professional Accounting, Iqra did a four-month placement at CDU’s tax clinic where she was responsible for lodging tax returns and providing tax consultation and advice. It provided valuable industry experience.

“Over this time, I gained confidence in building positive relationships with customers and clients and learnt how to maintain accurate records and perform tasks efficiently,” Iqra says.

Study equals success

When an exciting local job opportunity came up, Iqra knew she had to apply.

“Currently I’m working at The Arnhem Land Progress Aboriginal Corporation (ALPA), as a Payroll Specialist,” she says.

“The organisation is growing, and they wanted a quick learner who’s up to speed with things. As my goals were aligned with the company’s, it was a great fit for us both.”

Darwin’s Pakistani community

“There’s a large Pakistani community in Darwin, and since moving here I’ve made many Pakistani friends in class and through social gatherings and events,” says Iqra. “It’s wonderful that we can all celebrate our festivals together.”

Supported by friends, family and teachers, Darwin and CDU have been life-changing for Iqra.

“CDU is one of the best universities in Australia, and it provides pathways to commence your career as a professional in any field with extensive knowledge and experience required in that field.”
