Catherine is thriving in her role as a consultant at KPMG in Darwin. She credits her Master of Business Administration for her success.

“I was really grateful for the opportunities I had when I was studying at CDU and all the information I received there,” she says.

“I attended a networking event hosted by KPMG. It was an opportunity for all graduates to go and talk to employers. From that, I got an interview and was offered a job.”

Working success

For Catherine, working at KPMG has been a dream come true.

“It's a great place to work. There are many amazing and very smart people with extensive experience working in the industry across different sectors,” she says.

“There are a lot of new graduates too and people with multi-cultural backgrounds. As an international student, you don't feel excluded.”

Catherine notes that there are many positives to working in Australia.

“I really value the work-life balance in Australia,” she says. “In Chinese culture, work is the priority, and we put our career above everything else. Australians prioritise life, and it’s the key difference I’ve noticed.”

Getting out and about

Catherine loves the outdoor lifestyle that Darwin has to offer, especially as she’s so active.

“I like to do a lot of exercises because it helps me build up my mental and physical strength,” she says. “I love running outside and hitting the outdoor beach gym in East Point. Surrounded by beauty makes exercising even better.”

And when hunger hits, Catherine knows where to go.

“I like to go to the Parap market to get laksa on Saturday morning,” she says. “It’s become part of my routine.”

Words of experience

“It's definitely easier to build a career in the professional service industry in Darwin compared to other cities like Melbourne or Sydney,” says Catherine.

“As an international student it can be quite hard to get a job in the field that you want, but once you’re working in Darwin there are no restrictions. Everyone values your skills or abilities rather than your background.”
