Homebrew and messages in space - all part of NT Science Week
From how to homebrew truly Territory beer, to having your own art or message visible from space, this year’s NT National Science Week has something for everyone.
Kicking off with a pre-launch event “A journey to the Borneo Rainforest” tonight, the week will feature around 30 events and workshops.
One of the week’s highlights will take place on Saturday when a trio of Territory homebrewers will host the event “At yeast there’ll be beer”.
Charles Darwin University web designer and homebrew enthusiast Matt Elvey said the event would highlight the important role science played in determining the types of yeast used in beer.
“This talk is all about what yeasts do, where they come from and our misadventures trying to make beer with a wild yeast we collected in our Darwin backyards,” Mr Elvey said.
“Afterwards, we will have some tastings of the same beer made with a variety of yeasts and hopefully showcase a truly local Darwin beer.”
CDU College of Engineering, IT and Environment science outreach manager Carla Eisemberg said another point of interest for the week would be a high-resolution satellite taking images of the NT from space.
“A satellite will pass through the NT’s communities and you can send your message into space,” Ms Eisemberg said.
“You can do it from your backyard, you can even promote your business through it … you will be able to get a copy of the image later and use it however you like.”
Ms Eisemberg said most of the events for NT National Science Week were organised and run by CDU staff and students.
“For those curious about science, this is the time to come in and have a look at our laboratories and find out more about our research,” she said.
The week’s official launch will take place on Friday night with “Scinema under the stars”, which will feature a series of science-themed short films.
