New Ally Network to support LGBTQIA+ staff and students
Charles Darwin University is launching a new CDU Ally network where staff advocates will undergo training to better understand LGBTIQIA+ inclusion to support students and other staff members.
The network is being launched in line with the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on Monday, May 17, which marks the day the World Health Organisation (WHO) removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems.
The training for allies will equip staff with the skills and expertise to understand sexual and gender diversity as well as the challenges faced by LGBTIQIA+ people.
Charles Darwin University Vice- Chancellor Scott Bowman AO said the initiative was a part of the University’s commitment to building a diverse CDU community with pride.
“This is a chance for all staff to put their hand up for equality and work to make CDU a better place for LGBTQIA+ people to learn and work,” Professor Bowman said.
“We want to achieve inclusion, equality and acceptance in our community, so that all our LGBTQIA+ students, staff, family and friends can feel at home.”
The allies will be based across CDU campuses in the Northern Territory offering a friendly face and supportive ear to any students or staff that may have any concerns.
“Once our allies have completed their training they’ll wear an ally pin or a rainbow lanyard making them easily identified across campus as an ally. They’ll be a safe person that students and staff feel comfortable approaching,” he said.
CDU is also launching a joint student and staff Pride group – offering a chance for those who identify as LGBTQIA+ to connect with each other for support and advocacy.
The university has joined the national group Pride in Diversity this year for the first time – making it the first member in the Northern Territory.
