NAIDOC Week 2022

Northern Institute presents

Alcohol in the Territory Post July 2022: Preparing for a New Era

Abstract

At midnight on 16 July 2022 around 350 alcohol-protected areas in the NT will transition overnight from complete alcohol bans to unrestricted availability of alcohol.

With its failure to establish a transition process out of the Stronger Futures in the Northern Territory (SFNT) legislation that lapses in July, the Commonwealth government dodges responsibility for remote communities.

The NT government has done little to fill the void. At the eleventh hour, it has passed legislation that allows communities to ‘opt-in’ to continue the ban. But it is not clear how and whether this will work, and action, especially consultation, is called for by the Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance NT (AMSANT), Northern Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA), and Central Australian Aboriginal Congress (CAAC) among others...
