Trans Awareness Week runs annually from the 13-19th of November. Join fellow staff and students for a morning tea to learn about trans experiences and to expand our professional and supportive networks.

Seminar: 10 - 11 am
Morning Tea: 11 - 11:30 am

About

Trans Awareness Week is a mix of celebrations. education and commemoration concerning the lives of trans, gender diverse and non-binary people and has become an important part of the LGBTQI+ calendar.  While perhaps rather politically moderate in intent, the week-long emphasis on building social awareness of trans serves as a counterpoint to the waves of misinformation, vilification and sometimes violence that have accompanied a public awakening to our presence. In this talk, I follow a path through the personal and the political – as trans lives always do – from points of moral panic to points of trans joy and gender euphoria. Along the way, I comment on trans as a push-button ‘issue’ and on contrasting anti-trans agendas in Australia and the UK. More importantly, I address how trans represents enlivened ways of theorising sex and gender and how it offers us all – trans and non-trans alike – pathways beyond debilitating binaries.
